SHE'S JUST THE CLEANER

PART 4 — THE WEDDING THAT STOPPED

Ethan and Olivia entered a small meeting room beside the ballroom. Grace remained in the front row, though she did not sit.

Inside the meeting room, Olivia closed the door.

"My mother pressured me," she said immediately.

"Your mother didn't remove the card."

"I was trying to prevent a scene."

"You created one."

Olivia walked to the window and back.

"Do you know what today has been like? Everyone wants something from me. The florist was late, the photographer changed the schedule, and my mother has criticized every detail. I made a bad choice for one minute."

"You told my mother she belonged at the back because she cleans rooms."

"I was stressed."

"Stress didn't invent that thought. It only made you say it aloud."

Olivia stopped moving.

"What do you want me to do?"

"Tell me the truth. If we have children, will you tell them what their grandmother does? Will she sit with us when your family visits? Will she be in the photographs?"

"Yes."

"Then why couldn't she be in them today?"

Olivia looked down.

"Because I wanted my mother to approve of everything."

It was the first honest answer she had given him.

Ethan sat in one of the empty conference chairs.

"And you were willing to humiliate mine to get that approval."

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry. I will put her card back. I will apologize in front of everyone. We can still fix this."

"The card is already back."

"Then what else do you need?"

"Time to decide whether I can trust the life we're about to start."

Olivia stared at him.

"You're postponing the wedding?"

"Yes."

"There are two hundred people outside."

"Then we have two hundred people to inform."

Olivia returned to the ballroom alone first.

She walked directly to Grace.

"What I said was cruel," she told her. "I knew exactly who you were. I was ashamed of your work because I wanted my mother and her guests to approve of the wedding. You did nothing to deserve that."

Grace listened without rescuing her from the discomfort.

"I'm sorry," Olivia finished.

"I hear your apology," Grace said.

Olivia waited, perhaps expecting forgiveness to follow immediately.

It did not.

"Can you ask Ethan to reconsider?"

Grace looked at her carefully.

"No. His decision has to be his."

Olivia nodded and stepped away.

Ethan then spoke to both families. He did not repeat Olivia's words to the waiting guests. He simply announced that the ceremony would not take place that day and accepted responsibility for the inconvenience.

The hotel served the food that had already been prepared. Some guests stayed; others quietly left. The flowers remained bright around an empty ceremony space.

Margaret approached Grace near the end of the afternoon.

"I hope you're satisfied," she said under her breath.

Grace met her eyes.

"Your daughter made a decision. Your future son-in-law made another. Neither one belonged to me."

Margaret walked away without replying.
