SHE'S JUST THE CLEANER

PART 1 — ONE CHAIR

SHE'S JUST THE CLEANER

Olivia removed Grace's name card from the front-row chair before the ceremony had even begun.

The card was small—cream paper, gold border, GRACE BENNETT printed in careful black letters. Olivia held it between two fingers and pointed toward the final row of the hotel ballroom.

"Grace, your seat is at the back. Get up."

Grace looked at the empty chair beside her, then at the bride standing in the aisle. Her navy dress was neatly pressed. A light-gray cardigan covered her shoulders, and she carried a tan handbag she had owned for years.

She rose and immediately held out her invitation.

"Ethan reserved this seat. Here's my invitation."

Olivia barely glanced at it. She kept the name card in her hand and pointed toward the back again.

"I know. You're a cleaner. My family sits here."

Two meters behind them, Ethan stopped walking.

He had entered the ballroom to check whether the officiant had arrived. Instead, he saw his fiancée holding his mother's place card and ordering her away from the seat he had personally chosen.

Ethan crossed the aisle, took the card from Olivia, and returned it to the holder on Grace's chair.

"Olivia, put her name card back. That's my mother."

Olivia turned to him, lowering her voice without softening it.

"I know who she is. Think about the photos."

Ethan stared at her.

"You moved her because she cleans hotel rooms?"

Grace pulled her handbag close and turned slightly toward the rear aisle.

"Ethan, I'll sit at the back. Don't argue."

Olivia gestured toward the flowers, the waiting chairs, and the ballroom they had spent months preparing.

"It's one chair. Please don't ruin our wedding over this."

Ethan pulled Grace's chair outward and faced Olivia.

"Then answer me."

His voice stayed calm, but every nearby guest could hear the next words.

"After today, is my mother welcome in our home?"

Olivia opened her mouth, but no answer came.

That silence answered him first.
