SHE'S JUST THE CLEANER

PART 3 — WHAT THE DECISION REVEALED

The string quartet stopped rehearsing. The room grew quiet.

Olivia looked past Ethan at several guests who had turned in their seats.

"Can we talk privately?" she asked.

"Answer me first."

"Of course she would be welcome."

Ethan glanced at the place card Olivia had just tried to remove.

"As long as nobody important sees her?"

"That's not what I said."

"You didn't need to say it."

Margaret approached from the ceremony entrance. She wore a pale gold gown and held a phone filled with last-minute messages.

"Is there a problem?"

Olivia looked at her mother, then at Ethan.

"We were adjusting the seating."

Margaret gave Grace a quick, polite smile.

"Only for balance in the photographs. I'm sure Grace understands."

Grace's hand tightened around her invitation.

Ethan turned toward Margaret.

"My mother was assigned the front-row seat. There was nothing to adjust."

Margaret's expression remained composed.

"This is a formal event, Ethan. We have donors, board members, and the press attending. No one is insulting your mother. We're simply thinking about presentation."

Grace finally spoke.

"Presentation of what?"

Margaret blinked.

Grace continued, still calm.

"Everyone here will see my dress. They won't see my uniform unless somebody tells them about it. So the thing you want hidden isn't how I look. It's what I do."

No one answered.

Grace placed the invitation on the chair.

"I don't want Ethan's wedding to become a fight. I'll go home."

Ethan stepped between her and the aisle.

"Mom, stay."

"Look at the room," Grace said quietly. "This day can't begin again once it's broken."

"It was already broken before I walked in. I just didn't know."

Olivia's face tightened.

"You're making one terrible decision define our entire relationship."

"No," Ethan said. "I'm asking what the decision reveals."

He looked toward the ballroom doors. Guests were beginning to arrive in the lobby. In less than twenty minutes, the ceremony was supposed to begin.

"We need to talk now," he said.
