THE WRONG SIGNATURE
PART 6 — THE BANK FOOTAGE
The bank's investigation produced results by the following morning.
Security footage showed Clara entering the branch at 12:58 PM and speaking to the receptionist. Nolan took her form behind the counter. He placed it on a scanner, then returned it to her.
After Clara left, Nolan printed the scan. At 2:42, he entered Marcus's office using a temporary facilities card that should not have opened the door. At 2:51, he connected Marcus's repaired phone to a charging cable. At 3:14, he approved the transfer from Marcus's workstation.
The digital form had been created from Clara's scan. A document examiner later found that the five-thousand-dollar amount had been removed electronically and replaced with language authorizing the full balance.
Nolan had made one mistake beyond appearing on camera.
He saved a working copy of the altered form to a shared printer queue. The deleted file remained recoverable on the print server. Its metadata listed the user account that created it.
The receiving commercial account belonged to Arden Recovery Services.
Arden had been incorporated three weeks earlier. Its registered director was an elderly man who lived in assisted housing and had no knowledge of the company. The contact telephone number belonged to a prepaid device purchased with cash.
But the account's opening deposit had come from NL Consulting.
When Marcus gave that information to the police, the financial cases connected.
Victor had been diverting company money through NL Consulting. Thomas discovered the duplicate invoices and began collecting proof. After Thomas died unexpectedly, Victor learned about the signed medical authorization and saw a chance to take the personal savings as well. He needed someone inside the bank to convert the limited form into a full transfer.
Nolan had gambling debts and a history with Victor that went back to school. Victor promised him twenty thousand dollars once the transfer cleared.
It never cleared.
Nolan was arrested that afternoon at a roadside motel seventy miles away. Police found his bank laptop, twelve thousand dollars in cash, and the prepaid phone linked to Arden Recovery Services.
Victor was harder to reach.
He stopped answering calls, did not return to Reed Materials, and left his home before officers arrived.
He did, however, call Clara.
