THE WRONG SIGNATURE

PART 1 — THE IMPOSSIBLE TIMESTAMP

THE WRONG SIGNATURE

The account statement crossed the bank manager's desk hard enough to knock a pen onto the floor.

Emma Reed did not apologize. She pointed to the line showing that her late father's savings account had been emptied the previous afternoon.

"My father's account was emptied. Who authorized two hundred fifty thousand dollars?"

Across from her, Clara Reed opened a brown document folder with unsteady hands. Clara had been married to Emma's father for nine years, but Emma still thought of her as her father's wife rather than her own family. She removed a single paper and laid it beside the statement.

"He authorized me before surgery, but only for five thousand."

The bank manager, Marcus Lee, held the paper beside his computer monitor. The document Clara had brought authorized a withdrawal for medical expenses. The signature at the bottom belonged to Thomas Reed. The amount, written in both numbers and words, was five thousand dollars.

Marcus opened the electronic record attached to the account.

"This digital form approves the entire balance."

Emma leaned forward. On the screen was another authorization carrying what appeared to be the same signature, but it approved the transfer of every dollar in the account.

"That's not the form she brought."

Marcus opened the audit log. A timestamp appeared beside the digital authorization.

"It was submitted here yesterday at 3:14 PM."

Clara lifted the original form and pointed to its date.

"No. He signed mine before surgery."

Emma pulled an official death certificate from her black handbag and placed it beside the monitor. Her finger stopped beneath the recorded time of death.

"My father died at 11:20 that morning."

Marcus compared the two signatures, then opened the internal employee approval record.

"Then someone used his signature after his death."

He turned the monitor toward both women. The transaction had not come through online banking or an outside branch. It had been approved through an employee login inside that building.

Marcus pointed at the masked identification number.

"Who signed this—and who inside my bank approved it?"

No one in the office answered.

The question had already moved beyond the three people sitting around the desk.
