ROOM 408

PART 2 — THE WITNESS

The cleaner's name was Maya Torres.

Before she wore a hotel uniform, Maya had worked for six years in the accounts department of Hale Medical Supply. She processed invoices, checked payroll adjustments, and prepared monthly reports for senior management.

The company was owned by the woman standing across from her in the security office: Victoria Hale.

Hale Medical supplied gloves, masks, syringes, and testing equipment to clinics across the state. Its public advertisements spoke about trust. Its annual charity dinner raised money for rural health programs. Victoria appeared in photographs beside doctors, politicians, and oversized donation checks.

Inside the accounting department, Maya saw different numbers.

At first, the problems looked like ordinary mistakes. Small deductions appeared on warehouse workers' paychecks under the label "benefit adjustment." Temporary employees were charged for safety equipment the company was required to provide. Overtime hours disappeared after supervisors approved them.

Maya corrected several entries and assumed the software was responsible.

The same entries returned the following month.

She began comparing payroll records with internal transfers. Money deducted from employee benefits was moving into an account controlled by a consulting company. The consulting company had no employees, no office, and one director: Victoria's brother.

Maya printed three reports and requested a private meeting.

Victoria listened without interrupting. Then she closed the folder and pushed it back across the desk.

"You misunderstand how executive benefits are structured," she said.

"These deductions come from hourly workers."

"The board approved them."

"May I see the approval?"

Victoria's expression changed.

"Your job is to process the accounts, Maya. It isn't to question the board."

Two weeks later, Maya was dismissed for what the company called repeated errors and inappropriate access to confidential files.

No one mentioned the reports.

Without a reference from Hale Medical, she struggled to find another accounting position. She had rent to pay and a younger brother finishing nursing school. The Westbridge Hotel hired her for housekeeping within a month.

Maya took the job.

She also kept copies of the records.

Three former warehouse employees joined a legal claim against Hale Medical. Their attorney traced the deductions, found the consulting account, and contacted Maya. A formal hearing was scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Victoria received the witness list on Friday.

She checked into Room 408 on Saturday.
